Family Members in Oversight Agencies to Restrict Committee Secretary Appointment... Jun Hyunhee Proposes "Na Kyungwon Prevention Act"

Family Members in Oversight Agencies to Restrict Committee Secretary Appointment... Jun Hyunhee Proposes "Na Kyungwon Prevention Act" Yonhap News Agency

On October 21, Assemblywoman Jun Hyunhee of the Democratic Party of Korea proposed the so-called "Na Kyungwon Prevention Act," which prohibits the appointment of a National Assembly member as a secretary of a standing committee if their family member works at an organization under the committee's oversight.

On this day, Assemblywoman Jun announced in a press release that she had sponsored an amendment to the National Assembly Act containing these provisions. The main point of the amendment is to add a clause that restricts the appointment of a lawmaker as a negotiation group secretary of a standing committee if the lawmaker's spouse or immediate family member living together is affiliated with an organization subject to the committee's oversight.

Last month, the Democratic Party of Korea raised objections to Assemblywoman Na's appointment as secretary of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, citing that her spouse was serving as the chief judge of the Chuncheon District Court. Choo Mi-ae, the committee chair from the Democratic Party, put Na's appointment to a vote, and Democratic Party lawmakers voted to reject the proposal.

Assemblywoman Jun stated, "It is urgent to improve the system to resolve conflicts of interest involving secretaries and ensure the fair operation of the committee."
