KT, Naver Cloud, and Kakao Join the Consortium
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on October 21 that only the Samsung SDS consortium participated in the "National AI Computing Center" construction project.
The ministry explained that the first and second rounds of public offerings had failed, but as the third round of applications closed on this day, the Samsung SDS consortium submitted a proposal to build a data center at the Solaseado Data Center Park site in Haenam, South Jeolla Province.
It is known that KT, Naver Cloud, and Kakao are participating in the consortium.
Accordingly, in the first phase, which will take place this month, the ministry will evaluate the eligibility of the applicant and the business participation plan through a technical and policy review. In the second phase, from November to December, the goal is to finalize the private sector participant for the National AI Computing Center construction project within this year through financial reviews and other procedures.
Afterward, a public-private joint special purpose company (SPC) will be established to officially launch the National AI Computing Center construction project.
The National AI Computing Center aims to secure and build more than 15,000 advanced graphics processing units (GPUs) by 2028.
However, specific business plans regarding location, fees, and schedule, as well as strategies for supporting advanced GPUs for domestic industry, academia, and research institutions, promoting the adoption of domestic artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors, and collaborating with global companies, will be further detailed based on the business participation plan submitted by the selected private sector participant in the future.
The Ministry of Science and ICT expects that this project will stimulate private investment in AI infrastructure and foster a world-class environment for AI research, development, and services.
