A Total of 610 Drunk Driving Accidents Reported in the Past Five Years
Ahn Hyungjoo, a member of the Gwangju Seo District Council, announced on October 21 that the "Ordinance on the Prevention and Eradication of Drunk Driving in Gwangju Seo District," which he sponsored during the 334th extraordinary session, was approved as originally proposed by the relevant standing committee.
According to the statistics on drunk driving traffic accidents by local governments over the past five years (2020-2024), a total of 610 drunk driving accidents occurred in Gwangju Seo District, resulting in four fatalities.
This ordinance was proposed to widely raise awareness of the dangers of drunk driving and the need for prevention, and to establish an institutional foundation to prevent loss of life and property damage caused by drunk driving.
The main contents of the ordinance include: ▲ establishing plans for activities to prevent and eradicate drunk driving ▲ promoting prevention and eradication initiatives ▲ providing the basis for financial support and rewards. In addition, a new provision was introduced allowing the district to recommend that rental businesses for cars, bicycles, and personal mobility devices provide guidance and signage to prevent drunk driving.
Ahn stated, "Given the high recidivism rate for drunk driving, we must actively implement practical prevention measures such as education and campaigns," adding, "I hope that the enactment of this ordinance will serve as an institutional safeguard to protect the lives and safety of Seo District residents."
