Korea Music Copyright Association Hosts CISAC Legal Committee in Seoul to Discuss AI Copyright Issues Provided by the Korea Music Copyright Association

The Korea Music Copyright Association announced that it will host the Legal Committee meeting of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) at Mondrian Seoul Itaewon on October 21 and 22.

The CISAC Legal Committee is a key committee within CISAC, an international confederation of copyright collective management organizations worldwide. It is responsible for international copyright policy, including litigation, legal and policy review, and inter-organizational cooperation. The committee submits policy recommendations to the CISAC Board and serves as an advisory body for member organizations.

Approximately 30 legal representatives from copyright management organizations in 27 countries are expected to attend this meeting, which is being held in Korea for the first time.

On the first day of the meeting, key issues related to artificial intelligence (AI) and copyright will be discussed under the theme "Copyright Systems and Legal/Policy Directions in the Age of Artificial Intelligence." Major legislative topics to be addressed include the application of reproduction and public transmission rights in the process of generative AI learning, as well as the exemption clause for text data mining (TDM).

On the second day, participants will discuss the international harmonization of copyright systems and policy responses by sector. They will review the operational and supervisory frameworks of collective management organizations (CMOs) in each country, explore directions for institutional improvement, and consider the possibility of establishing a single organization to streamline music licensing procedures in the Asia-Pacific region.

The welcome dinner, to be held at Samcheonggak on October 21, will feature a traditional Korean music performance with instruments such as the gayageum, haegeum, and janggu. The following day, a cultural tour of Gyeongbokgung Palace and Namsangol Hanok Village will take place, accompanied by an English-speaking guide.

Choo Gayeol, President of the Korea Music Copyright Association, stated, "This meeting in Seoul will serve as an opportunity to concretize international standards and cooperation models for copyright protection in the age of artificial intelligence." He added, "We will actively disseminate the outcomes of these discussions to promote the rights and interests of creators at home and abroad and to build a fair music ecosystem."

Koo Sungjun, Head of the Legal Team at the Korea Music Copyright Association, commented, "The CISAC Legal Committee is a core consultative body that jointly shapes the direction of copyright systems worldwide." He continued, "Through this meeting, we will do our utmost to ensure that Korea can present practical institutional improvements and cooperation measures at the center of international copyright discussions."
