A Power Struggle Among the Bu, Yang, and Go Families

Netflix's "Gwaendang" Starring Han Seokkyu, Yoon Kyesang, and Choo Jahyun... Noir Drama About Three Jeju Families

The noir drama "Gwaendang" (working title), which depicts a power struggle among three prominent families in Jeju, will be produced by Netflix.

On October 21, Netflix announced that Han Seokkyu, Yoon Kyesang, Choo Jahyun, Yoo Jaemyung, Kim Jongsu, and Go Dooshim will star in the series. The title "Gwaendang" is a Jeju dialect term referring to relatives who perform ancestral rites together. It goes beyond simple blood ties to signify a mutually dependent network within the local community.

The story is set against the backdrop of Jeju's unique social structure, portraying the fierce conflict among the Bu family, who dominate the pig farming and horse racing industries; the Yang family, who are expanding their influence through real estate development; and the Go family, who once enjoyed their heyday in the casino business. Each family fights for its own interests, reflecting the dark undercurrents of Jeju society.

Han Seokkyu will play Bu Yongnam, the head of the Bu family-a character determined to protect his family and clan amid land disputes in Jeju. Yoon Kyesang takes on the role of Bu Geon, Bu Yongnam's half-brother, who struggles to secure his position within the family. Choo Jahyun will portray Bu Yongseon, another key figure in the Bu family.

Yoo Jaemyung will play Yang Gwangik, the head of the rival Yang family, while Kim Jongsu takes on the role of Go Daesu, who leads the Go family in Seogwipo. Jeju-born actress Go Dooshim joins the cast as Daepanhalmang, adding gravitas to the story.

The series will be directed by Choi Jeongyeol, known for the series "Vigilante" and the films "Start-Up" and "Glory Day." The production team includes veteran creators behind numerous hits such as "Squid Game," "Narco-Saints," "The Spy Gone North," and "The Age of Shadows," promising a high level of quality.
