Some Users Say "Orange Turns Pink"
Not All Devices Are Affected
The iPhone 17 Pro in the "Cosmic Orange" color from Apple has been observed to discolor into a pinkish hue. Some have raised concerns about the possibility of aluminum frame oxidation or defective coating, intensifying the controversy.
Recently, the U.S. IT media outlet Tom's Guide reported, "There have been cases where the Cosmic Orange color of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max is turning pink or rose gold."
Cosmic Orange is a new orange shade introduced by Apple. However, on the U.S. online community Reddit, a post appeared stating, "I wanted orange, but ended up with a pink iPhone," raising suspicions about a defect. In the photos released, discoloration is visible around the plateau (the protruding rear camera section) and the frame. Afterward, other users also shared photos, saying they experienced similar issues with their devices.
Users are posting complaints that the iPhone 17 Pro Cosmic Orange color changed to a pinkish hue within just a few days. Instagram
However, not all iPhone 17 Pro devices are experiencing this issue. The media outlet stated, "Our test unit of the Cosmic Orange iPhone 17 Pro has not shown any problems so far," and added, "Another reporter who has been using the device for three weeks has also not seen any color changes."
Some speculate that the discoloration may be due to oxidation of the aluminum frame. If the protective coating that prevents the metal surface from coming into contact with air is not properly applied, discoloration can occur. The iPhone 17 series features an aluminum design, which offers excellent heat dissipation but is a material prone to scratches due to its lower hardness.
One Reddit user stated, "I have experience working at the Genius Bar in an Apple Store, where you can receive technical and hardware support," and added, "There were also cases of aluminum discoloration in previous MacBook models, and Apple handled them through standard repair procedures within the warranty period."
The media advised that if users experience this problem, they should document the discolored area and report it to Apple customer service or an Apple Store. If the issue occurs within the warranty period, Apple is likely to respond with a replacement or repair.
Apple has not yet released an official statement regarding the controversy. The media outlet noted, "Despite high sales volumes, the number of reported cases is rare, suggesting the scope of the problem may be limited," and added, "We have reached out to Apple for comment and will provide an update once a response is received."
The iPhone 17 series was released in September. The base model with 256GB storage is priced at $799 (1.13 million won), the Pro at $1,099 (1.56 million won), and the Pro Max at $1,199 (1.6 million won).
