68 Industrial Accidents at Gwangju and Jeonnam Education Office Construction Sites... Sharp Increase in Jeonnam

20 Cases in Gwangju and 48 in Jeonnam Since 2022
Jeonnam Reports 21 Cases Last Year and 18 More This Year
Includes 5 Fatalities... "Urgent Need to Overhaul On-Site Safety Management"

It has been revealed that there were 68 industrial accidents at construction sites commissioned by the Gwangju and Jeonnam Metropolitan and Provincial Offices of Education over the past three years. In particular, Jeonnam has seen a yearly increase, with 18 cases already reported from January to July this year.

According to the data submitted by Seungah Baek, proportional representative of the Democratic Party of Korea, to the National Assembly audit on October 19, a total of 68 industrial accidents occurred at construction sites managed by the Gwangju and Jeonnam Offices of Education from 2022 through July 2024. Specifically, there were 20 cases in Gwangju and 48 in Jeonnam.


In Gwangju, there were 7 cases in 2022, 3 in 2023, 7 in 2024, and 3 cases up to July this year. Among these, there were 2 fatal accidents, 16 serious injuries, and 12 minor injuries. The types of accidents included 6 falls, 2 cases each of being buried or struck by objects, and 10 classified as other types.


In Jeonnam, the number of cases surged from 3 in 2022 to 6 in 2023, and then to 21 in 2024. This year alone, 18 cases were reported up to July. There were 2 fatalities, 6 serious injuries, and 40 minor injuries. The breakdown of accident types included 11 falls, 9 cases of entrapment, 7 collisions, 5 cases of being struck by objects, and 16 classified as other types.


Nationwide, during the same period, there were 968 industrial accidents at construction sites commissioned by offices of education, with 24 fatalities. Gyeonggi Province recorded the highest number of fatalities at 7, followed by North Gyeongsang Province and Busan with 3 each, Jeonnam with 3, Gwangju and Incheon with 2 each, and Gangwon, Daegu, North Jeolla, Jeju, and North Chungcheong with 1 each. No fatal accidents were reported in Seoul, South Gyeongsang, Daejeon, Sejong, Ulsan, or South Chungcheong.


Assemblywoman Baek stressed, "It is essential to strengthen the responsibility of metropolitan and provincial offices of education for preventing industrial accidents and to fundamentally overhaul on-site safety management systems."
