Waseda University stated that it decided to award the honorary degree in recognition of Chairman Koo's significant contributions to promoting economic cooperation between Korea and Japan as a private diplomat, serving as chairman of the Korea International Trade Association and director of the Seoul-Tokyo Forum, as well as his role as the 33rd president and development committee chairman of the Korea University Alumni Association, which helped expand international exchanges between the two universities.

This honorary degree is regarded as an honor bestowed upon individuals who have made outstanding contributions not only to corporate management but also to society at large. In particular, as Korea University and Waseda University are both prestigious private universities that have maintained a long-standing sisterhood relationship, the awarding of the honorary doctorate in law to Chairman Koo, a Korea University alumnus, is seen as especially meaningful.

President Aiji Tanaka said, "By growing LS Group into a global company with local subsidiaries in over 100 locations across 25 countries, Chairman Koo has greatly contributed to strengthening the international competitiveness of Korean industry. He has also played a key bridging role between the private sector and the government, and through ongoing communication with Japanese political and business circles, has achieved remarkable results in Korea-Japan economic cooperation."

In his acceptance speech, Chairman Koo stated, "Receiving this honorary doctorate is a deeply meaningful event that symbolizes the trust and exchange between the two universities, and I believe it also reflects the expectation that I will become a model leader for both Korea and Japan. I will continue to work with an even greater sense of responsibility for the active exchange and development of both countries."
