China's small modular reactor (SMR) "Linglong No. 1" has reportedly completed its cold functional test (CFT) successfully in recent days.
According to state-run media outlets such as Global Times and Xinhua News Agency on the 17th, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), a state-owned enterprise, announced the news regarding Linglong No. 1, which is installed in Changjiang, Hainan Province, the previous day.
The cold functional test is considered the first comprehensive health check of the entire nuclear power plant system. It is a stage that evaluates the integrity, reliability, and safety of the system before moving on to the next phase, such as the hot functional test (HFT).
Linglong No. 1 is the world's first land-based commercial SMR to pass the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safety review, and it can generate approximately 1 billion kWh of electricity per year.
