Yu Jaesung, Acting Commissioner of the National Police Agency, announced on the 17th that he would consider transferring the investigation of the suspicious death of a Yangpyeong County official in Gyeonggi Province to a different police jurisdiction.
Acting Commissioner Yu made this statement during the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee audit, in response to Assemblyman Lee Seongkwon of the People Power Party, who pointed out that "it is a conflict of interest for the Yangpyeong Police Station to conduct the investigation."
In his 50s, Mr. A, a Yangpyeong County Office official, was found dead at his home on the 10th, after being questioned by Special Prosecutor Min Jungki's team, which is investigating allegations involving First Lady Kim Keonhee.
Assemblyman Lee criticized that Special Prosecutor Min Jungki's investigation team, which questioned Mr. A, was the only one among nine teams to be composed entirely of dispatched police officers. He further stated, "Having the Yangpyeong Police Station investigate the suicide of a government official is like leaving a fish in the care of a cat," and added, "It is the same as having the perpetrator conduct the investigation."
