Video Released Showing Suspected North Korean Troops
The Ukrainian military announced on October 16 (local time) that it has confirmed North Korean troops deployed to Russia have participated in attacks on Ukrainian territory.
The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated, "North Korean drone operators adjusted the fire of multiple rocket launcher systems," and released a video showing a man in military uniform believed to be a North Korean soldier.
The Ukrainian military claimed that a unit operating in Russia's Kursk region is conducting reconnaissance with drones, identifying positions in the border area of Ukraine's Sumy region, and assisting in fire adjustment. They asserted that this is the first evidence of North Korean troops participating in attacks on Ukraine.
According to the local media outlet Kyiv Independent, the footage appears to have been obtained from a reconnaissance drone operated by North Korean troops that was shot down over Sumy region. North Korean troops were reportedly mainly deployed last August to repel Ukrainian forces that had invaded Kursk region.
The National Intelligence Service estimates that since October last year, 15,000 North Korean combat troops have been dispatched to Russia, with approximately 2,000 of them presumed to have been killed in action.
The Ukrainian military stated, "We are recording every instance of foreign units participating in armed aggression. Any unit involved in the invasion of Ukraine will be neutralized in accordance with the laws of war and relevant regulations."
