"US Will Not Follow... Vote No"
President Donald Trump of the United States strongly criticized the International Maritime Organization (IMO)'s push to introduce a global carbon tax on the shipping industry, calling it a "Global Green New Scam Tax."
On October 16 (local time), President Trump expressed his anger on his own social media platform, Truth Social, stating, "I am outraged that the IMO is trying to pass a global carbon tax (vote) in London this week."
He declared, "The United States will not participate in any form of this global green new scam tax on ships," adding, "We will never allow the creation of a 'green new scam bureaucracy' that raises prices for American consumers or uses your money to fund their 'green dreams.' Stand with America and vote 'No' in London tomorrow," he urged.
The IMO is scheduled to hold a vote on October 17 to decide whether to introduce the first-ever carbon tax in the shipping sector. The main framework involves providing incentives to ships that achieve greenhouse gas reduction targets based on the greenhouse gas intensity of their fuel, while imposing carbon charges on those that fall short of the targets.
The Trump administration has strongly opposed these moves, even mentioning the possibility of imposing tariffs or visa restrictions. President Trump, who has promoted policies to expand fossil fuel usage, has consistently criticized the previous Joe Biden administration's eco-friendly policies as the "Green New Scam." In this context, he has once again labeled the IMO's carbon tax as a "green scam."
