"Passing Down Precious Resources"... Yeongdeok County and Golden Trout Species Conservation Association Focus on Golden Trout Preservation

Yeongdeok County in North Gyeongsang Province is carrying out a golden trout eyed egg release project from September to December, in collaboration with the Yeongdeok Golden Trout Species Conservation Association, to preserve the unique genetic characteristics and population of the region's signature species, the golden trout.

Eyed eggs refer to eggs in which the eyes are visible through the eggshell just before hatching. The golden trout eyed egg release project involves capturing wild golden trout during their spawning season to collect eggs, fertilizing them at the golden trout hatchery, and then releasing the fertilized eyed eggs back into the rivers.

Every year, Yeongdeok County has worked to secure healthy inland water resources in the Osipcheon River by increasing the population of the golden trout, which is not only the county fish but also a renowned local specialty historically presented to the king.

This year, the goal is to produce about 10 million eggs and release approximately 3 million eyed eggs into the Osipcheon River and other areas. The remaining eggs will be hatched at the Yeongdeok Golden Trout Ecology Learning Center, with the juvenile fish to be released into major local rivers between March and May next year to further secure inland water resources. Some will also be used for the Yeongdeok Golden Trout Festival.

County Governor Kim Kwangyeol stated, "We are making every effort to preserve the inland ecosystem and the golden trout species so that it can become a pillar of the region's tourism industry. We will do our utmost to increase fishery resources and strictly monitor illegal fishing, ensuring that these precious natural resources can be passed down to future generations."
