A man in his 30s who collapsed and fell into a coma after participating in a marathon held in Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, has died after four days.

According to the police and fire authorities on October 15, Mr. A lost consciousness and collapsed while participating in the 8th Geoje Mayor's Island Flower National Marathon, which took place on October 12 around Geoje Sports Park and Sandaldo.

Mr. A collapsed while running the half marathon course and was rushed to a nearby hospital, then transferred again to a university hospital. However, he did not regain consciousness and passed away while receiving treatment.

Another man in his 30s, Mr. B, who also collapsed, reportedly has not yet regained consciousness.

On the day of the marathon, the late heatwave in the Geoje area caused the daytime high to reach 27 degrees Celsius, resulting in a surge of exhaustion cases.

A total of nine people were reported to have suffered from heat-related illnesses that day, including seven with minor injuries and two with serious injuries, experiencing symptoms such as high fever and dizziness.

The event, organized by the Geoje City Athletics Federation, featured three courses-5 kilometers, 10 kilometers, and a half marathon-with 6,600 participants.
