AI-Restored Late Master Jo Gongrye to Perform on Stage with Disciples Last Year's Intangible Cultural Heritage Festival Planned Performance 'Dangsan Party'

The National Intangible Heritage Center under the Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 15th that it will hold the "Intangible Heritage Festival - Hwarak Yeonhui" in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, from October 23 to 26. This year, the festival will showcase the present and future of intangible heritage by integrating advanced technology into audience participation programs.


AI-Restored Master Performs Joint Stage with Disciples

The opening performance on the 23rd will begin with Samulnori by master Kim Deoksu. The following "Master Homage" stage will spotlight the late Jo Gongrye, the holder of Namdo Deulnorae, in honor of the 100th anniversary of her birth. Her disciples will sing together with their teacher, restored through artificial intelligence (AI). Pansori singer and vocalist Choi Sooho will also participate.


On the 24th, "Connecting and Continuing," a performance that bridges the tradition and innovation of Gyeonggi folk songs, a National Intangible Heritage, will be held. The lineup includes holder Lee Chunhee, singer Lee Heemoon, and the group Obangsin.


On the 25th, masters such as Daegum Sanjo master Lee Saenggang, pansori artists Kim Cheongman and Kim Youngja, and Geomungo Sanjo master Kim Mugil will present the essence of intangible heritage through "Master and Virtuoso Sinawi." This will be followed by "Tal-ui Rak, General's Gut," a modern reinterpretation of traditional mask dance performed by Park Inseon and the Generals.


The closing performance on the 26th will feature singer Harim, the Blue Camel Ensemble, and vocalist Lee Narae.

Exhibitions, Hands-on Experiences, and International Exchange Programs

The "Holder's Works Exhibition" will showcase 233 works by 102 holders and transmission instructors in the field of National Intangible Heritage skills. The "Hanji ON: Embracing Intangible Heritage" contest winners will be screened at the "Intangible Heritage Film Festival," and film concerts combining movies and traditional arts, such as "The Magician" and "The King's Man," will also take place.


There will also be hands-on events for families. The "Folk Playground" offers traditional games like Yutnori, Tuho, and Ddakji-chigi. The "Open Workshop" provides craft experiences, while the "Paldo Heung Market & Traditional Gourmet Festival" will offer regional specialty foods and handicrafts. The "Ieojigyo" bus, a mobile educational space utilizing digital technology to experience national heritage, will operate throughout the festival.


Exchange programs bridging generations and borders have also been prepared. The "Children's Intangible Heritage Presentation" will feature the next generation of heritage transmitters, and the "Overseas Koreans Invited Performance" will see participation from Korean art troupes from Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. International cultural planners, including those from Singapore's Esplanade, will join discussions on international cooperation utilizing Korean intangible heritage.
