Police Launch Preliminary Investigation After Internal Review
Possibility Raised That Video Was Produced by a Foreigner
The police have launched a preliminary investigation after an AI-generated fake news video featuring the face and voice of President Lee Jaemyung recommending a specific investment platform spread online.
On October 14, the Cyber Investigation Unit of the Gyeonggi Southern Provincial Police Agency announced that it had begun a preliminary investigation into the AI-based investment platform 'EquiloomPRO.' Equiloom attracted investors by posting AI-generated videos and interviews on social media, claiming to guarantee stable monthly returns and engaging in fraudulent activities.
In the video, the anchor introduces Equiloom as if it were a government-certified investment destination. President Lee then appears, saying, "This is an opportunity to change your life. By investing 300,000 won per month, you can earn between 24 million and 30 million won." He also emphasizes that any citizen over the age of 18 can invest and make significant profits.
The video contains grammatical errors and awkward pronunciation throughout, raising suspicions that it may have been produced by a foreigner.
The police view the case as serious, given that it is an AI-generated fake news video using the president's face and voice, and began their investigation into the investment fraud case on October 13. An official stated, "Other than the fact that we have launched a preliminary investigation, we cannot disclose further details," but added, "There are about two confirmed videos and interviews."
