Kim Namjoon, spokesperson for the Presidential Office, announced in a briefing on the 14th that during the 45th Cabinet meeting presided over by President Lee Jaemyung, the government approved the personnel appointment plan to name Chairman No as Ambassador to China.
Only the final approval from President Lee remains for No to be officially appointed as ambassador. The post of Korean Ambassador to China has been vacant for nine months since former Ambassador Chung Jaeho stepped down in January. Ambassador-designate No is expected to handle matters such as coordinating the visit schedule of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is expected to visit Korea in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit to be held in Gyeongju.
Ambassador-designate No contributed to Korea-China exchanges by serving as an advisor to the International Advisory Board of Chengdu, China, in 2016. His selection is seen as symbolic, as former President Roh Tae-woo, during his tenure, promoted the so-called "Northern Policy" and established diplomatic relations between Korea and China in 1992.
