Six Themed Gardens Inspired by the Five Cardinal Colors
Experience the Seasonal Beauty and Flowers in Each Colorful Section
Hwangryonggang Autumn Flower Festival Runs from the 18th to the 26th
The Hwangryonggang Theme Garden, established in Jangseong County, South Jeolla Province, is emerging as a new "hot place" for autumn travel.
According to Jangseong County on October 14, the county has been developing a total of six themed gardens along the Hwangryonggang River since 2023 as part of its "Local Garden Construction Project." Inspired by the traditional five cardinal colors, each section features its own color and theme: Hwangryong Garden (yellow), Hongdam Garden (red), Cheongbaekri Garden (white), Pureunmulbit Garden (blue), and Geomeunsup Garden (black). In addition, the "Participation Garden," which preserves the artist garden, invited garden, and citizen participation garden created during the Jeonnam Garden Festival in May, has been added.
The most popular destination is Hwangryong Garden. On the site of the former public stadium, Jangseong grass has been planted, and a musical fountain and permanent stage have been installed by the riverside. Fan-shaped steps have been constructed to allow visitors to sit and view the stage, with tiered seating for comfortable performance viewing. Pine trees and sweet osmanthus trees gently encircle the garden, enhancing the landscape. As the representative garden of Hwangryonggang, it serves as the main venue for the spring and autumn festivals held each year.
The reason Hwangryong Garden is beloved by visitors lies in its sense of freedom. Visitors can spread out mats and enjoy the festival or outings with family anywhere they wish. If the sunlight is too strong, they can simply find a spot in the shade of the trees. Its proximity to parking lots and roads makes it highly accessible. In the evening, it is also a great place to enjoy the musical fountain and night views against the sunset.
Hongdam Garden, located between Seosamgyo Bridge and Munhwa Bridge, captures the autumn scenery of Baegyangsa Temple, famous for its maple trees. Centered on the color red, it features red photinia, barberry, azalea, and crape myrtle trees. Although the main blooming season has passed, red roses are also planted in one corner of the garden. Strolling leisurely along the paths between the gardens, listening to the sounds of migratory birds, insects, and the river breeze, visitors may find their minds feeling refreshed and clear.
Cheongbaekri Garden, next to Jangseong No. 1 Bridge, was inspired by the white stele of Park Suryang (1491-1554), a renowned upright official from Jangseong during the Joseon Dynasty. The garden's design, featuring a circular pattern of grass and white stones, catches the eye. At the center, a hill with an earthen path allows visitors to climb up and enjoy a panoramic view of the Hwangryonggang River. The garden is conveniently located near a snack bar, parking lot, and restrooms, and is also well-situated for crossing to the lotus garden on the opposite bank.
The goal is to complete Geomeunsup Garden, which will be planted with black-colored tree species, and Pureunmulbit Garden, which will showcase the beauty of nature with lotuses and herbaceous flowers, by next year.
County Governor Kim Hanjong stated, "I hope you will fully enjoy the harmonious scenery of autumn flowers and the themed gardens at the upcoming Jangseong Hwangryonggang Autumn Flower Festival, which will be held from the 18th to the 26th," adding, "We will continue to make meticulous preparations to ensure a comfortable visit for all."
Meanwhile, this year's Jangseong Hwangryonggang Autumn Flower Festival will feature a rich array of content for all generations, including orchestral performances of Studio Ghibli and Disney animation theme songs, a celebratory stage by Song Gain, the "J-Light Run" where participants run along the Hwangryonggang River to escape zombies, and the "Memory Theater" with comedian Lee Hongryeol, singers Park Sangmin, Hye Eunyi, and more.
