Two Research Institutes Selected for National Research Foundation Support Project
6-Year Funding of 4.2 Billion KRW Through August 2031
Keimyung University (President Shin Ilhee) has been selected for the 2025 Humanities and Social Sciences Research Institute Support Project by the National Research Foundation of Korea.
A total of 259 projects were submitted nationwide for this program, and only 38 projects (14.7%) were selected, making it an extremely competitive process.
Keimyung University will have two research institutes-the Institute of International Studies and the Center for Immigration and Multiculturalism-each carrying out a project. The research will be conducted over six years (in a 3+3 system) from last month until August 2031.
The Institute of International Studies (Principal Investigator: Professor Yoo Jeongwon, Department of Chinese Language and Chinese Studies) will conduct policy research on “Managing Historical Conflicts in the Glocal and AI Era,” while the Center for Immigration and Multiculturalism (Director and Principal Investigator: Choi Jongryeol, Department of Sociology) will pursue research on “Far-Right Movements and Multiculturalism: A Pluralistic Democratic Perspective.”
Both projects will receive research funding of approximately 2.1 billion KRW (with about 1.6 billion KRW from the national budget).
Professor Yoo Jeongwon stated, “We will research conflict resolution methods using AI and propose policy directions that can help minimize conflicts and promote integration.”
Director Choi Jongryeol also explained, “By comprehensively analyzing the spread of far-right movements and the challenges of multiculturalism, we will propose policies that can help balance pluralistic democracy.”
Meanwhile, since its establishment in 1995, the Keimyung University Institute of International Studies has conducted in-depth research on various global issues, focusing on relationships between world regions and countries.
The institute publishes the “International Studies Review” annually and leads the field of international studies by hosting international forums and academic conferences.
Since its establishment in 2008, the Center for Immigration and Multiculturalism has continued academic research and education on immigration society and multicultural issues. It contributes to the local community by operating programs under the Ministry of Justice and training multicultural society experts.
Shin Chaegi, Director of the Office of Research Affairs, said, “This selection demonstrates that Keimyung University is a research institution with interdisciplinary and convergent research capabilities in the humanities and social sciences,” adding, “We expect to achieve meaningful results at both the regional and national levels by combining international and multicultural studies.”
