Dalmaji Park to Be Transformed... Busan Launches Nature-Oriented Park Integrating Nature and Culture

First Step Toward Resolving Long-Term Undeveloped Urban Parks
23.3 Billion Won Invested
Preserving Natural Scenery
A Park Blending Nature and Culture by 2028

The Dalmaji Park area in Haeundae, Busan, will be transformed into a nature-oriented park.

The Busan Metropolitan Government (Mayor Park Hyungjoon) announced that it will hold the groundbreaking ceremony for the Dalmaji Park Development Project at 3:00 p.m. on October 14 at the planned site in Jung-dong, Haeundae-gu.

More than 100 people, including Mayor Park Hyungjoon, Haeundae-gu Chief Kim Seongsu, city council members Lim Malsuk, Shin Jeongcheol, and Kim Gwangmyeong, local district council members, and residents, will attend the event.

The Dalmaji Park project, with a total investment of 23.3 billion won, aims to preserve the area’s natural scenery and create a nature-oriented park that harmonizes nature and culture by 2028. The main facilities will include: ▲ "Dalbit Madang," a space for cultural programs ▲ "Dalmaji Garden Village," reflecting Busan’s garden culture ▲ "Dalmaji Park Support Facility," a remodeled multi-cultural space utilizing existing buildings ▲ "Dalmaji Meditation Shelter," a wellness area.

The city of Busan expects that, once completed, Dalmaji Park will become a world-class attraction combining coastal scenery and park space, similar to the beaches of Nice in France or Stanley Park in Vancouver, Canada.

For this project, Jeong Youngsun, a pioneer in the field of naturalistic gardens, will participate as the lead garden designer. Jeong, whose philosophy is "landscape architecture is poetry written on the land," has designed numerous public projects such as the Seoul Arts Center, Seonyudo Park, Yeouido Saetgang Ecological Park, and Seoul Botanic Park. Jeong is also the first Korean recipient of the "Geoffrey Jellicoe Award" from the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA), and will oversee the core concepts and designer garden plans for the "Dalmaji Garden Village" in this project.

Dalmaji Park was designated as an urban planning facility in 2002 but remained undeveloped for a long time. After Mayor Park Hyungjoon took office, full-scale land compensation began in 2022, securing the project site. This has laid the foundation for preserving Haeundae’s coastal scenery, resolving the issue of long-term undeveloped urban parks, and creating open spaces for citizens.

Since Mayor Park took office, the city has invested 575.3 billion won in 17 long-term undeveloped urban parks, securing parkland equivalent to 225 soccer fields (1.6 million square meters).

Mayor Park stated, "Dalmaji Park will be developed as a nature-oriented park where ecology, landscape, and culture coexist. By linking it with the Haeundae tourism belt, it will also contribute to revitalizing the local economy and strengthening tourism competitiveness. Urban parks are a core infrastructure for realizing the '15-Minute City Busan' vision, and we will continue to expand them so that all citizens can conveniently enjoy them within their living areas."
