On October 16, 2015, the area officially adopted the name "Namhansanseong-myeon," reflecting the globally recognized historical asset "Namhansanseong" in its regional name. This change laid the foundation for regional development and the enhancement of its brand value.
The previous name "Jungbu-myeon" was given in 1907 when the county office was established, signifying its central location in Gwangju County with Namhansanseong at its core. However, after multiple administrative reorganizations and the incorporation of neighboring cities and counties, the original meaning faded. In response, local residents and institutional leaders unanimously agreed in 2015-following a survey and a general meeting-to reflect historical significance, community sentiment, and the region's representative brand, Namhansanseong, in the area's name.
According to the resident survey, 80% of the 1,305 households participated in signing, and among the 1,032 valid households, 95% supported the change, demonstrating overwhelming approval. Subsequently, the area officially launched as Namhansanseong-myeon after enacting related ordinances, reporting to the provincial governor, updating administrative records, and conducting a public awareness campaign.
Namhansanseong is a historic site that has served as a strategic stronghold since the Three Kingdoms Period and is listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, making it one of Korea's representative cultural assets. Since the name change, Namhansanseong-myeon has become even more widely recognized both domestically and internationally, establishing a foundation for the revitalization of culture, tourism, and the local economy centered around Namhansanseong.
In particular, the "Namhansanseong Sports Town," completed in October 2024, is contributing to improved sports welfare for local residents and the expansion of tourism infrastructure. With a name that clearly reflects its historical and cultural identity, the sports town has gained great popularity among both local residents and visitors, further solidifying the area's status as a cultural and tourism city.
Going forward, Namhansanseong-myeon is expected to continue to build on its unique name to preserve its historical and cultural reputation, enhance residents' pride, attract domestic and international tourists, and grow as a world-class tourist destination.
Yoon Seokno, head of Namhansanseong-myeon, stated, "We will continue to develop as a leading cultural and tourism city representing Korea, based on our brand name that embodies history and culture."
