Appointed as Vice Chairman of the Democratic Party Policy Committee
Over 40 Years as a Traditional Public Administrator
Strength in Bridging Central and Local Government with Practical Expertise
Seungjong Song, who was recently appointed as Vice Chairman of the Policy Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea and previously served as Secretary General of the Korea Water and Wastewater Works Association, has officially announced his candidacy for the Gwangju Buk-gu District Chief election scheduled for June 3, 2026. He is also accelerating his strategic activities in preparation for the race.
Song is leveraging over 40 years of administrative experience and practical expertise gained in public service, and with his entry into the central party’s policy line, he is now actively formulating regional policy initiatives.
The appointment to the position of Vice Chairman of the Policy Committee is not an honorary title but a role with substantial policy responsibilities. Song will directly address everyday policy issues and local agendas at the central party level.
Song stated, "Policy must be born in the field. My role is to ensure that the voices of residents are connected to central policies," adding, "As Vice Chairman of the Policy Committee, I will create practical policies that improve the lives of local residents."
Previously, during the 21st presidential election, Song was recognized for his contributions in policy and organizational management within the Democratic Party of Korea’s campaign organization and received a first-class commendation.
At that time, he oversaw practical organizational management connecting the central and local levels and played a key role in policy coordination and implementation within the campaign headquarters.
This experience is expected to serve as a significant strength for Song as a candidate with both policy execution and organizational coordination capabilities when addressing local issues in the future.
Song began his career as a Grade 9 civil servant and served in various key departments at Gwangju City Hall, establishing himself as a traditional administrator.
He has held positions such as spokesperson for the Gwangju Summer Universiade Organizing Committee, head of the support team for the World Swimming Championships, director of education planning at the Civil Servant Training Institute, and head of management at the Waterworks Headquarters, gaining broad experience in planning, public relations, environment, education, and sports.
In 2017, he was promoted to Assistant Director General (Grade 3) of Gwangju City, joining the core of the administrative organization. He subsequently served as Vice Chairman of the Gwangju City Administrative Alumni Association, Executive Vice Chairman of the Buk-gu Sports Council, and director of the Chonnam National University Graduate School of Public Administration Alumni Association, continuing his community involvement.
Particularly recognized for his expertise in environmental and public infrastructure fields, Song was appointed Secretary General of the Korea Water and Wastewater Works Association, where he worked to improve waterworks policies at local governments nationwide and enhance the efficiency of public institutions.
Song commented, "The core of administration is execution. Only by understanding the field and designing systems can we create changes that residents can truly feel," adding, "I aim to be a candidate evaluated more for administrative action than politics, and more for practical implementation than slogans."
Both inside and outside the political sphere, Song’s appointment as Vice Chairman of the Policy Committee is seen as a signal of his full-fledged entry into politics.
With extensive administrative and central policy experience, Song, under the vision of "driving real change in Buk-gu as an administrator," has recently been meeting directly with local organizations and resident groups in each district of Buk-gu to listen to public opinion and strengthen his grassroots support.
