Briefing by the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters on the National Information Resources Service Fire
"Twenty Systems to Daegu... Relocation of Some Has Begun"
Twenty systems from the National Information Resources Service (NIRS) that were completely destroyed by fire have been selected for relocation and restoration in Daegu. The remaining systems will be restored using the computer rooms and equipment at the main Daejeon headquarters.
Kim Minjae, First Deputy Chief of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCHQ) and Vice Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, stated during a briefing at the Seoul Government Complex on October 13, "Among the systems located in Computer Rooms 1 through 6, those unrelated to the fifth-floor fire were fully restored as of October 5. For the unrecovered systems related to Computer Room 7 and 7-1 on the fifth floor, we plan to proceed with restoration using backup data and existing systems."
He continued, "For Computer Room 8 on the fifth floor, we completed dust removal and electrical work on October 11, and power supply has resumed. However, since many systems rely on equipment from Computer Room 7, immediate restoration is not possible. We will first restore the data stored on the equipment in Computer Room 7 and then sequentially restore the systems."
Systems to be migrated to the NIRS Daegu Center’s public-private partnership cloud have also been selected. Kim added, "For the systems in Computer Rooms 7 and 7-1 that were directly affected by dust and fire, depending on equipment availability, they will either be relocated to the Daegu Center or to other computer rooms within the Daejeon Center. While the number may increase during discussions, as of now, 20 systems have been selected for relocation to the Daegu Center, and for some, we have completed consultations with the relevant ministries and private cloud providers and have begun the migration process."
Systems not being relocated to the Daegu Center will be sequentially transferred after installing equipment in other computer rooms within the Daejeon Center. Lee Jaeyong, Director of the NIRS, said, "We will receive new equipment by October 15, set up an environment identical to the existing computer rooms, and begin restoring services for Computer Rooms 7 and 7-1."
As of 12:00 p.m. on October 13, 260 out of the 709 systems (36.7%) that were suspended due to the NIRS fire have been restored. Of the 40 first-tier systems most frequently used by the public, 30 have been restored. The 10 systems that have not yet returned to normal include: Integrated Veterans Affairs (Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs), e-People (Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission), National Law Information Center (Ministry of Government Legislation), and several services under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety such as the Public Data Portal, National Secretary website, National Secretary notification service, Safety Stepping Stone, Disaster Management Work Portal Integrated Situation Management, Document24, and the Mobile Resident Registration Card Verification Service.
