Chonnam National University Identifies Link Between Dietary Habits, Omega-3 Intake, and Cardiac Arrest

Chonnam National University Identifies Link Between Dietary Habits, Omega-3 Intake, and Cardiac Arrest (From left) Kang Jihyun and Moon Jinyoung, medical students at Chonnam National University.

Chonnam National University announced on October 13 that students from the College of Medicine participated in research to identify the causes and prognosis of cardiac arrest patients, achieving the significant accomplishment of publishing their findings in an international academic journal (SCI level).

Kang Jihyun and Moon Jinyoung, second-year students in the College of Medicine, have steadily learned the basics of epidemiological research, data analysis methods, and the process of writing medical papers from last year to this year. They based their studies on data from the CAPTURES study, a multicenter project involving 17 hospitals led by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, under the guidance of Professor Jung Yujin (College of Medicine, Endowed Associate Professor) in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

As a result, Kang Jihyun conducted research that identified a significant association between a preference for salty foods and the occurrence of cardiac arrest, and her paper is set to be published in the December issue of the Yonsei Medical Journal this year. In addition, Moon Jinyoung produced research results showing that omega-3 intake is associated with the occurrence of cardiac arrest, and published her paper in the September issue of Signa Vitae this year.

This achievement is particularly meaningful in that undergraduate students did not merely assist with research but took the lead in interpreting real data and writing papers, ultimately having their names published in international academic journals. It is especially noteworthy that they remained focused on their research and achieved these results despite the difficulties posed by medical and governmental conflicts while balancing their studies and research.

Professor Jung Yujin stated, "It is a tremendous asset that the students experienced the entire research process and achieved academic success in such a short period of time," adding, "I hope they will continue to expand their capabilities as researchers based on this experience."
