Jeollanam-do is implementing enhanced measures for food poisoning prevention and hygiene management to create a safe food environment for both residents and domestic and international visitors, as large-scale international events are being held consecutively alongside regional autumn festivals.
According to Jeollanam-do on October 12, over the past five years (from 2020 to 2024), an average of 24 cases of food poisoning occurred between September and November each year, accounting for approximately 40.7% of all food poisoning cases. In particular, food poisoning incidents have been concentrated in places where large numbers of people gather, such as festivals and event venues.
Since most of the food provided at regional festivals is prepared outdoors, hygiene management is even more important than usual.
To strengthen food and beverage safety at event venues during the festival period, Jeollanam-do is operating a Food and Beverage Safety Center at the 2025 Namdo International Gastronomy Industry Expo (October 1-26) and the Haenam LPGA BMW Ladies Championship (October 16-19).
Currently, 163 food hygiene inspectors have been deployed to the Food and Beverage Safety Center at the Namdo International Gastronomy Industry Expo. They are conducting daily hygiene guidance and inspections at 37 food and beverage facilities at the event venue, including 24 restaurants, 6 cafes and snack bars, 5 food trucks, and 1 convenience store.
Inspection items include checking for display or storage of products past their expiration date, spoiled or deteriorated food, use of substandard raw ingredients, and health checkups for food service workers. Minor violations are addressed on-site through guidance, while significant violations are subject to administrative action. Any products or cooked foods suspected of causing food poisoning will be immediately collected and sent to the Jeonnam Institute of Health and Environment for analysis.
Jung Gwangseon, Director of Health and Welfare at Jeollanam-do, stated, "We plan to strengthen thorough hygiene inspections and preventive activities to provide safe food at regional festivals and event venues during the autumn outing season," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure that all visitors can enjoy a healthy festival culture."
