Chey Tae-won, Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, visited China from October 10 to 12, a little over two weeks before the APEC CEO Summit, to ensure the successful hosting of the event and to expand business cooperation between the two countries.

According to the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry on October 12, the purpose of this visit was to request the attention and cooperation of the Chinese government and business community, as China will be the next chair country of APEC. The visit also aimed to make the APEC CEO Summit in Gyeongju a turning point for more substantial economic cooperation between Korea and China.

On October 10 in Beijing, Chairman Chey met with He Lifeng, Vice Premier of the State Council of China, Ren Hongbin, Chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), and other key figures. They reviewed the current state of economic cooperation between the two countries and exchanged views on ways to expand private-sector cooperation, including increased exchanges between companies.

In particular, CCPIT is planning to lead a large business delegation of about 100 representatives to this APEC CEO Summit. As CCPIT will be the main organizer of next year’s event, both sides confirmed their close partnership and held wide-ranging discussions on ways to ensure the successful hosting of the event and to generate meaningful results.

During the meeting, Chairman Chey stated, “CCPIT is the most influential trade and investment promotion organization in China and has played a key role in Korea-China economic cooperation for many years. It has built a partnership with the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry through bilateral and multilateral exchanges. I welcome the Chinese business delegation led by Chairman Ren Hongbin, and as this CEO Summit will feature sessions covering key topics of private-sector cooperation such as artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, carbon neutrality and energy transition, and the global supply chain, I hope it will serve as an opportunity for companies from both countries to strengthen external exchanges and cooperation.”

During this visit to China, Chairman Chey also traveled to Shanghai on October 11 and 12, where he met with Chen Jining, Shanghai Party Secretary, and attended the 37th International Business Leaders’ Advisory Council (IBLAC) for the Mayor of Shanghai. Since its first meeting in 1989, IBLAC has served as a global business platform where CEOs of leading companies in finance, manufacturing, logistics, and other sectors, along with senior Shanghai officials such as the Party Secretary and Mayor, discuss key issues. At this event, Chairman Chey called on business leaders from various countries and Shanghai officials to show interest in and participate in the Gyeongju APEC CEO Summit.

Yoon Cheolmin, Head of International Trade and Commerce at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated, “The attention and cooperation of key partner countries is essential for the successful hosting of the APEC CEO Summit. By visiting China, the next chair country and Korea’s largest trading partner, we hope this APEC CEO Summit will broaden the horizon of economic cooperation between the two countries and serve as a valuable opportunity for mutual development.”
