Five Injured, Including Police Officers, During Arrest
A man in his twenties who stole a vehicle and fled in Gangnam, Seoul was apprehended after a police chase.
According to Yonhap News on October 10, the Siheung Police Station in Gyeonggi Province is investigating a man in his twenties, identified as Mr. A, on suspicion of theft and other charges. Mr. A is accused of stealing a Tesla that was parked in front of a restaurant in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam District, at around 4:15 p.m. that day. He reportedly noticed that the keys were inside the car, secretly got in, and drove away. A witness who saw this reported it to the police.
As Mr. A fled toward Siheung City, the Siheung police, who received a request for cooperation, began pursuit. At around 5:40 p.m. that day, they arrested him in the act in front of a supermarket on a main road in Baegot-dong.
During the arrest, two patrol cars blocked both sides of the Tesla, while two civilian vehicles, whose drivers responded to police requests, blocked the front and rear. However, Mr. A strongly resisted by moving the car back and forth and side to side without getting out of the vehicle. As a result, five people-including three police officers in the patrol cars and two civilians-sustained minor injuries, and the vehicles were damaged.
Ultimately, the police fired two blank rounds and one live round into the air, broke the Tesla's window, and then fired a taser five times at Mr. A before successfully apprehending him. Mr. A was not under the influence of alcohol, and he tested negative in a rapid drug test. However, it was reported that he has a history of schizophrenia.
The police plan to investigate Mr. A in detail regarding the circumstances of the crime and will consider whether to request an arrest warrant after the investigation.
