The Incheon city government announced on October 10 that two of its support projects under the "Bioplastics Support Center Construction Project," which is being promoted as part of its strategy to foster the eco-friendly bioindustry, have been selected as demonstration special exemption projects for new technologies in research and development zones by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The demonstration special exemption is a system that conducts demonstrations targeting various regulations arising from the unclear classification of biodegradable plastic waste under the current Waste Management Act. If the results confirm the need for regulatory improvement, relevant laws and regulations are revised accordingly. This is significant in that it allows innovative bioplastic technologies, which have faced commercialization challenges, to be verified in real-world environments and lays the groundwork for institutional improvements.
The two demonstration special exemption projects selected this time are: the "Biodegradable Plastic Composting Device and System" by the consortium of Geumgang Bio, Green Green, and Dongsung Chemical, and the "Post-use Biodegradable Air Purifier Filter Module Recycling System" by the consortium of Hansea and Kyowon Property. These two research and development projects will undergo demonstration for two years at Incheon National University, which serves as the R&D hub for the Incheon Small but Strong Research and Development Zone.
An official from the Incheon city government stated, "The selection of these new technology demonstration special exemption projects in the research and development zone is an important milestone that goes beyond simple technology development, marking Incheon’s leap forward as a leading city in eco-friendly bioindustry innovation." The official added, "We will continue to improve regulations and support technology development in order to achieve carbon neutrality, lead the circular economy, and establish ourselves as a global eco-friendly city."
Meanwhile, following this achievement, the city is in discussions to submit two additional demonstration special exemption projects and plans to continuously identify and resolve market entry challenges faced by companies, thereby enabling local businesses to secure global competitiveness in the eco-friendly bioindustry sector.
