Achieved in Less Than Five Days After Launch
"Faster Pace Than ChatGPT"
OpenAI's artificial intelligence (AI) video app 'Sora' has surpassed 1 million downloads.
According to CNBC, a U.S. business media outlet, on October 9 (local time), Bill Peebles, head of the Sora division at OpenAI, announced on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) the previous day, "Despite Sora being limited to the North American region, it surpassed 1 million downloads in less than five days after its launch. This is a faster pace than ChatGPT." He added, "We are working hard to keep up with Sora's explosive growth."
Sora is a video creation and sharing app launched by OpenAI on September 30. Users can enter text prompts to generate short videos, and, similar to other social media platforms, algorithmic feeds tailored to interests and topics are provided. This is similar to other short-form video services such as TikTok or Instagram Reels.
The app is based on 'Sora2', an upgraded version of OpenAI's video-generating AI model, 'Sora'. Currently, the Sora app is available only on iPhone and requires an invitation code to access. Nevertheless, Sora ranked number one in downloads on the Apple App Store.
Alongside Sora's rapid rise in popularity, copyright infringement controversies have also emerged. According to CNBC, some videos on the platform feature animated characters such as 'SpongeBob', 'Rick and Morty', and 'South Park'. In response, the Motion Picture Association (MPA) stated, "There is a surge in videos on OpenAI's service that infringe on the copyrights of our member companies' movies, programs, and characters," urging, "OpenAI must take immediate and decisive action."
Previously, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated, "We will provide copyright holders with more detailed control over character generation," adding, "This will be similar to the existing opt-in model (where users must directly consent to the collection of personal information), but will allow for a wider variety of additional settings."
