25% Tariff on Medium and Large Trucks Follows Passenger Cars
Broad Expansion of Item-Specific Tariffs
The United States will impose a 25% tariff on imported medium and large trucks starting in November.
On October 6 (local time), President Donald Trump announced via his self-created social networking service, Truth Social, that "starting November 1, 2025, all medium and large trucks entering the United States from other countries will be subject to a 25% tariff."
President Trump had previously signaled at the end of last month that he would impose a 25% tariff on imported large trucks, initially suggesting early October as the implementation date. Although this latest announcement delays the effective date by about a month, it reaffirms the policy of imposing a high tariff on medium and large trucks.
Earlier, the U.S. Department of Commerce began investigating the impact of medium and large truck imports on national security under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act in April. The decision to impose a 25% tariff on medium and large trucks is seen as a follow-up measure based on the results of that investigation.
The United States is already imposing a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum, and a 25% tariff on passenger vehicles and auto parts. In addition, the U.S. is expanding item-specific tariffs to include medium and large trucks, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and furniture, continuing its broad-based protectionist stance.
