A man who set fire to his wedding photos in the master bedroom during a marital argument has received a suspended prison sentence.
On October 6, the Jeonju District Court Gunsan Branch Criminal Division 1 (Presiding Judge Baek Sangbin) announced that it had sentenced Mr. A (51), who was indicted on charges of attempted arson of an inhabited building, to one year and six months in prison, suspended for three years, along with an order for probation.
Mr. A was indicted for setting fire to his wedding photos and other items with a lighter, using them as kindling in the master bedroom of his apartment in Iksan City at around 4:20 p.m. on July 13.
When the flames suddenly flared up, he hurriedly poured water on them to prevent the fire from spreading further.
As a result, the fire only burned the couple's wedding photos and part of the master bedroom, and did not spread to neighboring apartments.
The court stated, "The defendant committed the crime after arguing with his spouse and failing to control his emotions. The location of the arson was the apartment where he lived, and there was a risk that not only his wife and children, but also many other residents unrelated to the argument, could have suffered serious harm."
The court continued, "However, considering that the defendant extinguished the fire immediately after setting it, preventing significant property damage or injury, and that the victim, his spouse, does not wish for him to be punished, these factors were taken into account in the sentencing."
