Section Chief A Found in Cardiac Arrest at Sejong Government Complex
Ministry to Set Up Memorial Altar at Funeral Hall in Sejong City
On October 3, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that it would make every effort to handle the aftermath of the death of a public official who was responsible for the National Information Resources Service fire incident.
On this day, following the employee’s death by falling, the ministry issued a notice stating, "We offer our deepest condolences to the deceased," and added, "The Minister of the Interior and Safety and all staff members will do their utmost to manage the aftermath of this incident."
According to the ministry, Section Chief A, who was affiliated with the Digital Government Innovation Office, was found in a state of cardiac arrest at approximately 10:50 a.m. near the Central Building of the Sejong Government Complex, where he worked.
Given that A’s mobile phone was found at the smoking area on the south terrace of the 15th floor of the Central Building, it is presumed that he took his own life.
A was transported to the hospital in a state of cardiac arrest and was later pronounced dead. It is reported that since the fire incident, A had been overseeing the team responsible for issues related to the national computer network disruption.
The ministry plans to set up a memorial altar for A at a funeral home in Sejong City.
Minister Yoon Hojoong of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety was reportedly preparing to travel to Sejong City after being informed of the employee’s death.
Following the employee’s death, the ministry canceled the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters briefing that had been scheduled for the afternoon.
The ministry stated that the police are currently investigating the incident and will provide additional information as soon as the detailed results become available.
Previously, on September 26 at 8:16 p.m., a fire broke out in the lithium-ion battery in the computer room on the fifth floor of the National Information Resources Service. The fire destroyed 384 batteries and servers, paralyzing 647 government computer systems.
According to Yonhap News Agency, A was not included as a reference or suspect in the investigation and is known to have been unrelated to the case.
The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency’s special investigation team for the National Information Resources Service fire has so far booked four people on charges of professional negligence resulting in fire: one official from the National Information Resources Service, two officials from the battery relocation construction company, and one official from the construction supervision company.
