"How About Gyeonggi Traditional Liquor for This Chuseok?"... Gyeonggi Agricultural Research Institute Recommends Five Varieties Including Sangnakhyang

Gyeonggi Province has recommended five special types of traditional liquor to enjoy with family ahead of the Chuseok holiday.

Since 2009, the Gyeonggi Agricultural Research and Extension Services has registered 12 patents and transferred technology to 28 companies, resulting in the commercialization of 24 products. Among these, Sangnakhyang, 3 Makgeolli, Paju Gaeseong Ginseng Makgeolli, Dam Diamond, and Soyeo River 42 have been introduced as traditional liquors suitable for Chuseok ancestral rites this year.

Sangnakhyang is a traditional liquor produced at Vaneheim Brewery in Namyangju, made using more than 90% Gyeonggi-grown agricultural products such as Gyeonggi rice, whole wheat, and oats, and brewed using beer-making methods. The unique off-flavors of mixed grains have been minimized, while orange and lime aromas have been added for a refreshing taste. With a high rice content, it is dry yet light, and its strong carbonation pairs well with the rich foods typically enjoyed during the holiday.

3 Makgeolli is a ginseng makgeolli produced at Mimiso in Pocheon, using patented technology that reduces the earthy smell of ginseng and enhances saponin extraction. With an alcohol content of 6%, it offers a light and smooth taste that can be easily enjoyed by younger generations.

Paju Gaeseong Ginseng Makgeolli is a non-sweetened makgeolli produced at Unjeong Brewery in Paju, made using patented technology that reduces the bitterness of ginseng and high-temperature steaming methods. With an alcohol content of 9%, it is heavier than regular makgeolli but still smooth and easy to drink.

Dam Diamond is a distilled liquor brewed at Naeoldarm in Seongnam, using nuruk made from Gyeonggi rice and mixed grains, resulting in a blend of various grain, floral, and ripe fruit aromas. The distillation aging technology increases contact with air after making soju, enhancing flavor and aroma while shortening the maturation period. With an alcohol content of 40%, it was awarded the grand prize in the distilled liquor category at this year's Gyeonggi Liquor Awards, recognizing its quality.

Soyeo River 42 is a 42% distilled liquor produced at Chuyondang in Yeoju, featuring a dramatically shortened aging period for distilled soju. While the typical maturation process takes over a year, this product achieves a clean aroma and smooth finish in just two to three months. Having won the gold prize at the 2024 Gyeonggi Liquor Awards, it is recommended for liquor enthusiasts who prefer a rich flavor.

These traditional liquors can be purchased from the official online mall of Vaneheim Brewery (vaneheimbeer.com), as well as each brewery's Naver Smart Store (martstore.naver.com), Mimiso (/mimiso), Unjeong Brewery (/uj_brewery), Naeoldarm (/naeoldarm), and Chuyondang (/chuyondang).

Seong Jehoon, Director of the Gyeonggi Agricultural Research and Extension Services, stated, "Traditional liquors made from Gyeonggi agricultural products reflect the tastes of younger generations while offering both quality and diversity," adding, "We will continue our research and support to promote the consumption of Gyeonggi agricultural products and revitalize local breweries."
