Chuseok Holiday Marked by Autumn Rain... Full Harvest Moon Unlikely in Capital Region and Gangwon Yonhap News Agency

As of 5:00 p.m. on October 2, rain has already begun to fall mainly in South Jeolla Province due to the influence of a low-pressure system moving eastward from the southern part of the West Sea. As night falls, rain will also begin in South Chungcheong, North Jeolla, western South Gyeongsang, and Jeju.

Subsequently, the remaining regions of South Gyeongsang will see rain in the early morning of October 3, and the rain will expand to eastern Gangwon, North Chungcheong, and North Gyeongsang in the morning. Additionally, southern Gyeonggi Province is expected to experience rain between early morning and morning on October 3, and central and southern parts of western Gangwon may see rain from late afternoon to evening on October 3.

The rain will continue through October 4, with precipitation persisting in Chungcheong, inland southern regions, and the southern coast of South Jeolla until the early morning of October 4, and in eastern Gangwon, the coastal areas of Gyeongsang, and Jeju until the morning of October 4. From midday to evening on October 4, rain is expected in southern South Chungcheong and the Honam region.

In the southern regions and Jeju, which are close to the passing low-pressure system, gusty winds, thunder, and lightning may accompany the rain. In particular, from early morning to afternoon on October 3, torrential downpours of 30 to 50 millimeters per hour are expected on the coast of South Jeolla and in Jeju.

Expected rainfall through October 4 is as follows: 30 to 80 millimeters in Jeju, the coast of South Jeolla, Busan, and the southern coast of South Gyeongsang (up to 150 millimeters in mountainous areas, up to 120 millimeters or more outside mountainous areas, and up to 100 millimeters or more on the coast of South Jeolla); 20 to 60 millimeters in Gwangju, inland South Jeolla, Ulsan, and inland South Gyeongsang; 10 to 40 millimeters in Daejeon, southern South Chungcheong, southern North Chungcheong, and North Jeolla; 10 to 30 millimeters in Daegu and southern North Gyeongsang; 5 to 20 millimeters in eastern Gangwon, Sejong, northern South Chungcheong, central and northern North Chungcheong, central and northern North Gyeongsang, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo; and less than 5 millimeters in southern Gyeonggi and central and southern parts of western Gangwon.

On October 5, the day before Chuseok, brief rain is expected in Chungcheong during the day, and in the capital region and inland/mountainous areas of Gangwon from afternoon to night. On Chuseok, rain will fall in eastern Gangwon, and from afternoon to evening, the capital region, western Gangwon, and the northeastern coast of North Gyeongsang will also see rain. With cloudy and rainy conditions, it will be difficult to view the full Chuseok moon in the capital region and Gangwon. In Chungcheong and southern regions, there may be moments when the full moon is visible through the clouds.

At the start of the Chuseok holiday, strong winds and rough seas are expected to disrupt travel to hometowns. On October 3, gusts reaching speeds of around 55 kilometers per hour (up to 70 kilometers per hour in mountainous areas) are expected mainly along the coasts and in mountainous regions nationwide. In particular, in the mid-mountainous areas of northern Jeju and the mountains of Jeju, wind speeds may exceed 70 kilometers per hour (over 90 kilometers per hour in mountainous areas), resulting in even stronger winds.

At sea, strong winds of 30 to 55 kilometers per hour (8 to 15 meters per second) and high waves of 1.0 to 3.5 meters are forecast for the outer central West Sea and the outer southern West Sea in the early morning of October 3, the outer southwestern sea and Jeju waters in the morning of October 3, the outer southeastern sea in the afternoon of October 3, and the outer southern East Sea starting October 4. Strong winds and high waves are also expected in the East Sea and South Sea on October 6 and 7, and in the central East Sea on October 9, so please take this into account when planning your return trip.

Temperatures are expected to remain similar to or slightly higher than seasonal averages for the time being. On October 3, morning lows are forecast to range from 15 to 21 degrees Celsius, with daytime highs between 19 and 25 degrees. The expected minimum and maximum temperatures in major cities are: Seoul and Incheon, 19 and 23 degrees; Daejeon, 18 and 21 degrees; Gwangju, 17 and 22 degrees; Daegu, 18 and 22 degrees; Ulsan, 19 and 22 degrees; and Busan, 21 and 23 degrees.
