The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art will screen the documentary film "The Man Who Paints Waterdrops" (2022), which captures the life and artistic world of Kim Tschang-Yeul, a leading figure in Korean contemporary art, at the museum's Seoul cinema from October 10 to November 1.

National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art to Screen "The Man Who Paints Waterdrops" Featuring Kim Tschang-Yeul Still cut from the movie "The Man Who Paints Waterdrops." Provided by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art.

The documentary was co-directed by Kim Oan, Kim Tschang-Yeul's son and a film director, together with director Brigitte Bouillot. It comprehensively explores Kim Tschang-Yeul's body of work, reinterpreting his life and the historical context in a multidimensional way, and traces the artistic anguish embedded in his silence and solitude.

Kim Tschang-Yeul was marked by a unique strangeness and silence since childhood. Through the cinematic encounter between the aging father and his son, the documentary confronts familiar yet unknowable inner wounds, trauma related to death, and the sense of guilt carried through life and art. Filmed over more than four years, it sheds light on both Kim Tschang-Yeul as a person and as an artist.

Previously, the documentary was officially invited to the Artscapes section of the 28th Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, one of the world's top three documentary festivals. It also won the Emerging Director Award at the 13th DMZ International Documentary Film Festival and the Silver Horn Award at the 61st Krakow Film Festival, among other recognitions for its artistic merit. In addition, it was invited to prestigious festivals such as the 24th Barcelona International Documentary Film Festival, the 47th Seoul Independent Film Festival, and the 12th New York Documentary Film Festival, receiving enthusiastic responses from audiences worldwide.

The film will be screened a total of 12 times at the Seoul cinema every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 3 p.m. from October 10. Reservations can be made on the museum's website starting at 6 p.m. on October 2. Each screening is limited to 90 advance reservations and 30 on-site registrations on the day of the event, and admission is free.

Kim Sunghee, Director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, stated, "'The Man Who Paints Waterdrops' is a powerful and beautiful film that fully confronts the anguish of a man and the unique legacy left by artist Kim Tschang-Yeul in Korean art history. It will offer a new understanding of Kim Tschang-Yeul."

The large-scale retrospective "Kim Tschang-Yeul," the first since his passing, will be on view at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, through December 21.
