A 46-Story Residential Complex to Be Built
Underground “Street Mall” to Connect Directly to Gireum Station

Sinwolgok District 1, which had remained as Seoul’s last red-light district, will be transformed into a residential complex comprising 2,201 units.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 1st that it had convened the Integrated Review Committee for Urban Regeneration Projects on the 30th and finalized the review agenda for the “Mia Central Redevelopment Promotion District Sinwolgok District 1 Urban Redevelopment Project (Amendment).”

The site will feature eight buildings, each with six basement levels and 46 above-ground floors, accommodating a total of 2,201 residential units. In addition, retail facilities, office facilities (officetels), and neighborhood living facilities will be established. Of the total, 197 units will be provided as rental housing.

The site is adjacent to Gireum Station on Subway Line 4 and an intercity bus stop, and it is also the planned route for the upcoming Dongbuk Line. In the future, a public pedestrian pathway will be created to connect the bus stop with nearby complexes, further improving accessibility to the Dongbuk Line.

An underground “street mall” directly connecting Gireum Station on Subway Line 4 with the complex will also be constructed. The underground shopping arcade and retail facilities will be directly linked to the subway station, enabling convenient shopping and work.

A children’s park will be created on the north side of the complex, and a cultural park will be established on the west side. A public parking lot will be installed beneath the cultural park to address parking demand for both commercial facility users within the complex and residents of the surrounding area. The city also plans to improve pedestrian pathways that had been cut off by narrow, aging alleys and to secure open spaces and green areas on the ground level, creating a more pleasant urban landscape.

Choi Jinseok, Director of Housing at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated, “We will modernize the previously poor residential environment and infrastructure in Sinwolgok District 1 and revitalize the local economy through commercial facilities directly connected to the subway station. We expect this project to become a turning point that brings new vitality to the entire Seongbuk District.”
