A Variety of Cultural Events Nationwide for "Culture Month"
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on October 1 that, in celebration of October as "Culture Month," it will co-host the "2025 Culture Month" commemorative event with Seogwipo City from October 17 to 19 in the old downtown area of Seogwipo, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.
Culture Month was established in 1972 under the Framework Act on Culture to enhance public understanding and participation in culture and the arts. The Framework Act designates October as Culture Month and the third Saturday of October as Culture Day. Since 1990, the government has held commemorative events for Culture Month. This year, the main event will take place in Seogwipo, and a variety of cultural events will be held nationwide throughout October.
This year’s Culture Month event will be held under the theme "Again! Sky, Wind, and Sea: The Wisdom of the Gods Delivered by Seogwipo." During the event period, the main venue near Cheonjiyeon Falls in Seogwipo will host the opening performance "Seolmundae Halmang Bonpuri" (October 18), which reinterprets the Jeju myth of Seolmundae Halmang through theater, pansori, dance, and other forms. There will also be performances by domestic and international artists such as Jaurim, Ibrahim Maalouf, and N.Flying.
Various cultural events will also take place throughout Seogwipo, including street performances by local artists, documentary screenings featuring stories of Seogwipo citizens, and experiences of traditional Jeju clothing and cuisine in locations such as Lee Jungseop Street and Jaguri Park. Detailed schedules and information about the commemorative event can be found on the official website for the "2025 Culture Month Event."
In addition to the 2025 Culture Month commemorative event, the Ministry will expand the "Culture Day," which is usually held on the last Wednesday of each month, to the entire month of October under the "October is Culture" campaign. Culture Day has been designated as the last Wednesday of each month since 2014, separate from Culture Day in October.
The Ministry announced that it will expand special programs held during Culture Day week-such as "Youth & Silver Mic" and "Culture Delivery Everywhere"-to the entire month of October, supporting performances, exhibitions, and experiences nationwide so that people can enjoy culture in their daily lives. Major national and public cultural facilities will also expand their cultural benefits to every Wednesday. The National Museum of Korea and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art will offer free admission to permanent exhibitions and extended evening hours until 9 p.m. every Wednesday in October. Theaters such as CGV, Lotte Cinema, Megabox, and CineQ will also participate in the October is Culture campaign, offering discounted movie tickets for 7,000 won not only on Culture Day (October 29) but also on October 22.
Additionally, the Ministry will hold events such as: ▲ "2025 Korea is Performing" (October 14-November 16, nationwide); ▲ Hangeul Day commemorative cultural event (October 9, National Museum of Korea Plaza); ▲ Asia Culture Week (October 1-4, Asia Culture Center); and ▲ the 80th Anniversary Library Concert at the National Library of Korea (October 15, National Library of Korea).
Other regional festivals and events during Culture Month in October will include: ▲ Daegu International Opera Festival (September 26-November 8); ▲ 2025 Seoul Autumn Festa (October 4-November 12); ▲ Sejong Hangeul Festival (October 9-11); ▲ 2025 Gyeongju Silla Cultural Festival (October 10-12); ▲ 2025 Yanggu Humanities Festival (October 18); ▲ Gwangju International Art Fair (October 23-26); and ▲ Bucheon International Animation Festival (October 25-29).
