The presidential office announced that President Lee Jae-myung held a summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on the 30th, reaffirming their commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
According to Kang Yoo-jung, spokesperson for the presidential office, this discussion took place during the summit between President Lee and Prime Minister Ishiba, as reported at a briefing at the BEXCO Press Center in Busan on this day.
Spokesperson Kang stated, "President Lee explained our government's efforts and policy initiatives to ease tensions and build trust in order to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue and achieve peace on the Korean Peninsula, and requested cooperation from Japan." She added, "The two leaders reaffirmed their firm commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of lasting peace."
Kang also noted, "The two leaders agreed on the necessity for South Korea and Japan, as neighboring countries with similar positions and global cooperation partners, to act together in response to the international community amid rapidly changing geopolitical circumstances and trade order."
The presidential office also announced that the two leaders exchanged views on historical issues.
According to Spokesperson Kang, President Lee referred to Prime Minister Ishiba's speech at the United Nations, expressing, "I share your view that we must face the past and move toward a brighter future." Prime Minister Ishiba, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on the 23rd (local time), stated, "If we do not face history head-on, we cannot face a bright future."
However, the presidential office explained that there was no discussion during this summit regarding the bilateral negotiations with the United States on tariffs, which both countries are currently facing difficulties with.
