In particular, Gangneung City achieved the remarkable feat of winning the Excellence Award for two consecutive years, having also received the same honor last year.
The 'National Local Government Job Awards' is a major initiative held annually by the Ministry of Employment and Labor, which evaluates the efforts and achievements of metropolitan and basic local governments across the country in job creation, and selects and awards outstanding local governments. The program aims to raise public interest in regional employment policies and is recognized as a flagship project in the field of job creation.
Since 2022, Gangneung City has focused the administrative capacity of all its departments under the vision of becoming 'Gangwon's Leading Economic City for Business.' As a result, the city achieved a record-high employment rate for those aged 15 to 64 (68.7%) last year and exceeded its target for government-supported jobs by 113%.
Gangneung City received high praise for its efforts to attract companies and expand investment in building a tourism industry base to create private-sector jobs, as well as for supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, investing in new and expanded business facilities, and fostering a business-friendly environment through initiatives such as the designation of national industrial complex opportunity development zones and the cultivation of regionally specialized industries.
Additionally, the city was recognized for its diverse employment creation initiatives, including customized job creation projects tailored to local industry demand, support for foreign workers and win-win job creation programs, youth employment initiatives for future generations, job creation based on future growth engines, and efforts to overcome employment crises among the aging population through job opportunities-contributing to the revitalization of the local economy.
Mayor Kim Hongkyu of Gangneung City said, "I am very pleased that our consistent efforts to realize the vision of becoming the leading economic and tourism city have resulted in receiving the Job Award for four consecutive years. Expanding employment is the greatest form of welfare and marks the beginning of a virtuous cycle that leads to economic revitalization and population growth. We will do our utmost to create stable jobs through economic and tourism policies that every citizen can truly feel."
