Musical Actor Nam Kyungjoo Selected as Audit Witness... Kim Seungsoo: "Listening to Voices from the Field"

Kim Seungsoo, a member of the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee from the People Power Party, announced that Nam Kyungjoo, a musical actor, has been selected as a witness for the parliamentary audit of the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee on October 29. The purpose is to listen to voices from the field for the development of the musical industry.

Nam Kyungjoo is a representative actor of the first generation of Korean musicals. Assemblyman Kim Seungsoo explained, "I invited actor Nam Kyungjoo as a witness to review the achievements and challenges of the Korean musical industry and to explore institutional and policy support measures, including the necessity of enacting the Musical Industry Promotion Act."

Assemblyman Kim Seungsoo emphasized, "Korean musicals achieved global success this year by sweeping six categories at the Tony Awards. Next year marks the 60th anniversary of Korean musicals and the 20th anniversary of the Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF), making it a significant year in the history of Korean musicals. Now, as the world focuses on K-Musicals, parliamentary-level support is desperately needed to help musicals become a core part of the Korean Wave cultural industry."

In the musical industry, there have been ongoing opinions that, despite the musical industry being a high value-added sector that creates numerous jobs and added value, its growth is limited due to insufficient legal foundations.

Last June, Assemblyman Kim Seungsoo sponsored the Musical Industry Promotion Act. On the 2nd of this month, he attended the "Musical Forum 2025" hosted by the Korea Musical Association at the Daehakro Art Center Grand Theater in Jongno-gu, Seoul, and pledged to ensure the passage of the Promotion Act for the development of the musical industry.

Assemblyman Kim stressed, "The Musical Industry Promotion Act, which is currently pending in the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, needs to be enacted as soon as possible. Through the establishment of an independent law, we must systematically implement the formulation of basic plans, foster professional talent, protect intellectual property rights, and promote the overseas expansion of original musicals, thereby laying the foundation for Korea to become a powerhouse in content and culture."

Additionally, Assemblyman Kim stated, "By listening to voices from the field through Nam Kyungjoo, a leading figure in the Korean musical sector, we will strengthen the institutional foundation of the musical industry. I will do my utmost to ensure the passage of the Musical Industry Promotion Act and to help K-Musicals achieve even greater success on the global stage."
