Jungnang District in Seoul (Mayor Ryu Kyunggi) announced on September 29 that it will hold the "2025 Jungnang Stray Animal Adoption Photo and Essay Contest" to raise social awareness about adopting stray animals and to promote a culture of respect for life. The contest will run until October 15.

This contest is a pre-event for the "3rd Jungnang Companion Family Culture Festival." It is designed to encourage the adoption of stray and lost animals by sharing heartwarming daily life stories after welcoming them into families. The theme is "Happy Daily Life After Adopting a Lost or Stray Animal." Any Jungnang District resident who has adopted a dog or cat in the district since 2023 is eligible to participate. Participants must submit both adoption verification documents and a photo and essay capturing a meaningful moment.
Each person may submit up to three entries. Photos must be in JPG or JPEG format with a resolution of at least 2000×3000 pixels. Only works personally taken after January 2023 are eligible, and metadata such as the date and time of shooting must be included. Composite photos or computer-generated images are not permitted. Essays must be original and at least 300 characters in length.
Entries will be judged by external experts. A total of seven winners will be selected: one Grand Prize, one First Prize, two Excellence Prizes, and three Encouragement Prizes. Winners will receive pet-related items such as pet strollers, and ten additional finalists will receive coffee coupons worth 10,000 won each. The winning works will be exhibited at the "3rd Jungnang Companion Family Culture Festival" on November 8 and will later be used in animal welfare promotional materials.
Ryu Kyunggi, Mayor of Jungnang District, stated, "A mature companion animal culture begins with respect for life," adding, "I hope this contest will help broaden positive perceptions about adopting stray animals."
Meanwhile, Jungnang District is operating the "Our Neighborhood Pet Care Center" to support vulnerable groups who may have difficulty caring for their pets during long holidays such as Chuseok. The service is available to basic livelihood security recipients, lower-income households, single-parent families, and single-person households. The designated local agency, Mangudong Geumran Animal Pet, provides safe care services for up to 10 days. Through this initiative, the district aims to prevent pet neglect and abandonment and foster a healthy companion animal culture.
