'It Finally Happened': Even the President's U.S. Visa Revoked... Calls to Relocate UN Headquarters Emerge

Clash with the U.S. after joining a pro-Palestine protest
"UN should move to a more democratic location... Proposes Doha"

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has strongly opposed the U.S. government’s decision to revoke his visa, calling for the relocation of the United Nations headquarters.

According to foreign media outlets such as Axios on September 27 (local time), President Petro stated on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), “President Donald Trump of the United States has violated the founding principles of the United Nations,” and added, “It is time to move to a more democratic location. I propose Doha (Qatar) as the new UN headquarters.”

He further emphasized, “As the President of Colombia, I simply expressed my opinions freely at the United Nations General Assembly,” and asserted, “International law is the wisdom of humanity and will protect me.” He also argued, “Genocide is a crime against humanity, and humanity must respond and punish those responsible.”

Previously, President Petro personally joined a protest condemning the situation in Palestine during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. At the scene, he insisted on the need to establish an international force for the liberation of Palestine, and addressed the U.S. military, saying, “Obey the orders of humanity, not the orders of President Trump.”

In response, the U.S. State Department notified him of his visa revocation, describing his actions as “reckless and inflammatory.” The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately issued a statement criticizing the United States, saying, “Using visa cancellation as a diplomatic weapon goes against freedom of expression and the spirit of the United Nations.”

Colombia has traditionally been considered a U.S. ally in South America, but conflicts have become more frequent since the beginning of President Trump’s second term. The United States is reportedly wary of President Petro’s left-leaning stance and his political closeness to Venezuelan President Maduro, and is seeking to prevent his associates from taking power in next year’s Colombian presidential election.
