Mokpo City in South Jeolla Province has launched an "Onnuri Gift Certificate Refund Event" to revitalize traditional markets during the Chuseok holiday, taking active steps to boost the local economy.
For the seafood refund event hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, three markets-Dongbu Market, Cheongho Market, and Jungang Food Market-were selected. For the agricultural and livestock products refund event hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, four markets-Jungang Food Market, Dongbu Market, Cheongho Market, and Jayu Market-were chosen, marking the highest number of participating markets in the Jeolla region.
The seafood refund event will take place from October 1 to 5 at Dongbu Market, Cheongho Market, and Jungang Food Market. Shoppers can receive up to 30% of their seafood purchase amount back in Onnuri Gift Certificates. Specifically, a refund of 10,000 won is given for purchases over 34,000 won, and 20,000 won for purchases over 67,000 won.
During the same period, the agricultural and livestock products refund event will be held at Jungang Food Market, Dongbu Market, Cheongho Market, and Jayu Market, with the same refund criteria applied to purchases of domestically produced agricultural and livestock products. Each person can receive up to 20,000 won in refunds.
This initiative coincides with the second round of the government’s "Livelihood Recovery Consumption Coupon" program and the "Win-Win Payback" campaign, which will refund increases in card spending from September to November 2025 as digital Onnuri Gift Certificates. The city expects these efforts to create a synergistic effect for the local commercial district.
A city official stated, "We will actively promote the traditional market refund events for Chuseok to revitalize the local economy, which is struggling due to the economic downturn, and do our utmost to encourage the consumption of domestically produced agricultural, livestock, and seafood products."
Meanwhile, the city has contributed to the revitalization of traditional markets in the Jeolla region by holding five special events for holidays such as Seollal and Family Day, recording approximately 1.2 billion won in refunds.
