Groundbreaking Ceremony for Eco-Friendly Garden Embracing Uiam Lake and Sangjungdo's Nature
Seeds Planted by Citizens Grow into Potted Plants on Stage... The Journey Toward a Garden City Begins
Design Finalized Through Citizen and Expert Collaborati
Chuncheon City in Gangwon Province, led by Mayor Yuk Donghan, is finally breaking ground on the long-awaited 'Lake District Garden Development Project.' The city will hold the 'Chuncheon Lake District Garden Groundbreaking Ceremony with Citizens' at 3 p.m. on October 1 at the Sangjungdo garden site (256 Jungdo-dong).
This event will symbolically mark the beginning of the journey toward a garden city, featuring a performance in which seeds planted by citizens during the vision declaration ceremony in September have grown into potted plants and are brought onto the stage. All citizens are welcome to attend.
The Lake District Garden has been designed to maximize the use of the water and islands of Uiam Lake and Sangjungdo, with the goal of encouraging citizen-led participation and minimizing artificial elements. Above all, the core objective is to create an eco-friendly garden that harmonizes water, terrain, and wetlands, while preserving the water resources of Uiam Lake and the ecological environment of Sangjungdo to the greatest extent possible.
For over a year, the city has worked closely with garden experts, advisory committee members, and citizens to finalize the spatial design, while also thoroughly reviewing challenging issues such as cultural heritage and environmental concerns, thereby laying a solid foundation for the project. This groundbreaking ceremony represents the first fruition of these extensive preparations shared with citizens, and also serves as a symbolic starting point for Chuncheon's transformation into a garden city.
Starting with this ceremony, the city will officially launch the development project. The site covers approximately 180,000 square meters, with a total project cost of 15.4 billion won, and aims for completion in 2027. Once finished, the garden is expected to provide rest and healing in citizens' daily lives and become a new symbolic space reflecting Chuncheon's unique charm.
A city official stated, "The Lake District Garden will not simply be a space, but a place of rest and healing that permeates the lives of each and every citizen," adding, "We will do our utmost for the future of Chuncheon as a garden city created together with its citizens."
