"Elections Should Not Be Rushed... Timing and Momentum Are Key"

Park Cheolhwan, who served as the governor of Haenam County during the 6th term of local autonomy, has hinted at the possibility of running in next year's local elections, while maintaining a cautious stance.

In a phone interview with Asia Economy on September 25, Park addressed recent speculation in local political circles about his candidacy, stating, "I am always thinking about the county administration," but also adding, "Elections are matters that require a careful approach."

He said, "The election is still next year, so I don't think it's appropriate to reveal my position prematurely at this point. I am preparing for possible changes, but to be honest, I'm still on the fence." He emphasized, "Based on my experience of running in four elections, there's no need to rush. Elections cannot be won by hasty preparation; timing and trends are ultimately what matter. By the end of this year, around December, the situation will naturally become clearer."

Park was elected governor of Haenam County in a by-election in 2010 and promoted policies such as expanding support for farmers and fishermen, emphasizing "field-oriented administration." However, he was unable to complete his term, resigning midway in 2017 due to conflicts over personnel management within the county office and internal backlash from public officials.

As controversies over promotion bottlenecks and the appropriateness of personnel decisions intensified at the time, Park effectively stepped down in disgrace. However, some view him as a political scapegoat. Recently, there have been moves among some of his supporters to gauge local opinion, but Park has not yet made a final decision on whether to run.

Meanwhile, regarding the current governor, Myeong Hyeonkwan, Park said, "I understand he is working hard to lead the county administration. If things are going well, the residents will make a proper assessment."

He added, "By the end of the year, Governor Myeong will likely clarify his position, and I believe the residents will look back on the administration's performance and make a sober judgment. Especially since the residents of Haenam-eup have a high level of political awareness, I think they will make a wise choice."

The 9th nationwide simultaneous local elections are scheduled to be held in June 2026. In Haenam, the movements of potential candidates are gradually becoming more visible, drawing attention to possible changes in the local political landscape.
