Accelerating Special Ship Capabilities Through Merger with HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is accelerating its efforts to penetrate the Southeast Asian naval vessel market by launching order acquisition activities in Malaysia, following its initiatives in the Philippines.
On September 24, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries announced that it recently held the Maritime Capability & Collaboration Forum in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This event was organized in conjunction with the 3rd Korea-Malaysia Defense Industry Cooperation Seminar, hosted by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Malaysia. The forum was attended by Jeongsoo Cheon, Executive Director of the Special Ship Business Division at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, as well as representatives from the Royal Malaysian Navy, the Malaysian Ministry of Defence, and the local industry.

During the forum, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries presented its vision to support the Royal Malaysian Navy's "15-to-5 Force Structure Transformation Plan" and shared its experience in the design and operation of the Littoral Mission Ship (LMS) Batch-III, Multi-Role Support Ship (MRSS), and Multi-Purpose Command Platform (MPCP). The company also introduced its business model that combines technological capabilities with local cooperation, referencing its projects in Peru and the Philippines, and expressed its commitment to supporting the growth of the defense industry through technology transfer and training.
The Royal Malaysian Navy plans to acquire LMS Batch-III and MRSS vessels over the next five years. Additional orders are anticipated as a result of the force structure transformation. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is currently pursuing a merger with HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. Through this merger, the company aims to strengthen its special ship business capabilities and enhance its responsiveness to the Southeast Asian naval vessel market. Executive Director Cheon stated, "We will actively support the modernization of the Royal Malaysian Navy by building long-term partnerships based on proven designs, performance, and global expertise."
Meanwhile, since 2016, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has won orders for and delivered a total of 10 vessels to the Philippines, including two frigates, two patrol vessels, and six offshore patrol vessels. In 2022, the company also established a logistics support center at the Subic Naval Base to provide maintenance and repair services.
