The Ministry of National Defense and Anyang City announced on September 24 that they had signed the "Initial Memorandum of Understanding for the Relocation Project of the 50th Ammunition Battalion" at Anyang City Hall, which includes plans to relocate and underground the military ammunition facilities in Bakdal-dong, Manan-gu, Anyang.
The relocation project of the 50th Ammunition Battalion is being promoted by Anyang City to create the "West Anyang Eco-Friendly Convergence Smart Valley." Anyang City will construct replacement facilities and donate them to the Ministry of National Defense. In return, the Ministry will transfer the former site, which will be decommissioned, to Anyang City under a "donation for compensation" arrangement.
The memorandum of understanding signed on this day includes the basic guidelines for the relocation project of the 50th Ammunition Battalion, details and timing of property donation and compensation, and other specifics necessary for the management and implementation of the relocation.
The new ammunition depot to be constructed by Anyang City as a replacement facility will be underground, incorporating advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure stable storage and management of ammunition. Through this, the lifespan of the ammunition will be extended and operational efficiency will be improved, while also securing a safe distance from nearby residential areas to protect residents' property rights and living environment, thereby contributing to civil-military cooperation.
The Ministry of National Defense stated, "After signing the memorandum of understanding, we plan to designate Anyang City as the project operator and approve the project plan, among other follow-up procedures. We will continue to work closely with Anyang City to ensure the smooth progress of the project."
