Geumcheon District Grants Honorary Street Name "Jeongjo Daewang-ro" to Siheung-daero

Guide Signs Installed Along 5km Stretch from Seoksu Station to Siheung IC

Geumcheon District in Seoul (District Mayor Yoo Sunghoon) has granted the honorary street name "Jeongjo Daewang-ro" to a section of Siheung-daero within its jurisdiction.

Siheung-daero is the route that King Jeongjo used in 1795 for the royal procession to visit the tomb of his father, Crown Prince Sado, in celebration of his mother, Lady Hyegyeong Hong’s 60th birthday. At that time, King Jeongjo bestowed the name "Siheung" on the area and improved the road. It is said that he used this route to communicate with the people and observe the local economy.

Reflecting this historical significance, the district designated the honorary street name "Jeongjo Daewang-ro." The honorary section stretches about 5 kilometers from Seoksu Station to Siheung IC, with two guide signs installed at Siheung Sageori and Doksan Sageori. In addition, honorary street name signs have been installed at major intersections to ensure residents can easily recognize the new name.

Geumcheon District expects that granting this honorary street name will elevate the status of its signature festival, the "Geumcheon Siheung Haenggung Cultural Festival," honor local history and culture, and foster a sense of pride among residents.

An honorary street name is an alternative designation for a road, granted in recognition of the public interest or social contributions of individuals or organizations, and is distinct from the official street name. Previously, Geumcheon District designated "Siheung Haenggung-gil" as the honorary name for Eunhaengnamu-ro, the main road leading to Siheung Haenggung, where King Jeongjo stayed during his royal procession.

Yoo Sunghoon, Mayor of Geumcheon District, stated, "The designation of Jeongjo Daewang-ro as an honorary street name is not simply about naming, but a meaningful initiative to share our region’s history and culture with residents." He added, "We will continue to implement various policies to enhance Geumcheon District’s identity and urban brand value."
