The Jeonnam International Ink Painting Biennale Secretariat announced that "Sema Painting" by Gongjae Yun Duseo, currently on display at the 2025 Jeonnam International Ink Painting Biennale, will be available for public viewing until October 12.
"Sema Painting," created in 1704, is a scroll measuring 75.5 cm in width and 46 cm in height, painted with ink on silk. The work depicts a horse cleansing itself by the water’s edge, rendered with concise yet powerful brushstrokes.
This piece exemplifies the meticulousness and naturalistic tendencies of late Joseon ink painting, earning acclaim for its detailed portrayal of the horse’s muscles and hair, as well as the tension and rhythm created throughout the composition by the contrast between empty space and dense ink.
The adjustment to the exhibition schedule, which brings the end date forward from the originally planned October 31, was made at the request of the Haenam Yun family, who prioritized the preservation of the work and a safe exhibition environment.
After October 12, a high-quality reproduction, created by photographing the original, will be displayed for visitors. The work can be viewed at the Gosan Yun Seondo Museum in Haenam.
The Jeonnam International Ink Painting Biennale Secretariat stated, "We will present the artwork in optimal conditions until the final day of public viewing on October 12."
The 2025 Jeonnam International Ink Painting Biennale runs until October 31. Visitors can experience a wide array of works by 83 artists from 20 countries, encompassing painting, installation, and media art that bridge the traditional and contemporary aspects of ink painting. The event is held at venues in Haenam (Gosan Yun Seondo Museum, Land’s End Pilgrimage Literature Hall), Jindo (Sojeon Art Museum, Namdo Traditional Art Museum), and Mokpo (Culture & Arts Center, Indoor Gymnasium).
