Strong Early Session Buying by Foreign Investors and Institutions
Doosan Enerbility and Samsung Electronics Surge Over 3%
The KOSPI reached another all-time high in early trading, rising nearly 1%. With consecutive days of gains, it has broken through the 3,480 level and is now challenging the 3,500 mark for the first time in history.
On September 22, the KOSPI opened at 3,463.84, up 0.54% from the previous trading day. The upward momentum continued in the early session, pushing the index to 3,481.96 and setting another record high.
It is believed that simultaneous buying by both foreign investors and institutions drove the index higher from the start of the session. Foreign investors recorded net purchases of 184.2 billion won, while institutions net bought 144 billion won. Individual investors recorded net sales of 301.8 billion won.
Many sectors saw gains. The machinery and equipment sector stood out with the highest increase at 2.07%. Several other sectors also rose more than 1%, including electricity and gas (1.60%), electrical and electronics (1.47%), and medical and precision instruments (1.12%). In contrast, telecommunications (-0.76%) and metals (-0.63%) declined.
Among the top market capitalization stocks, Doosan Enerbility posted the largest gain at 3.4%. Samsung Electronics also rose by 3.2%. This was followed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (1.6%), Hyundai Motor Company (0.8%), and LG Energy Solution (0.7%). On the other hand, Hanwha Aerospace (-1.0%), SK Hynix (-0.5%), and Samsung Biologics (-0.4%) declined.
The rally continued in the KOSDAQ market as well. The index started at 896.06, up 0.69% from the previous session, and extended its gains. It also recorded 870.26 in the early session.
Unlike the KOSPI market, individual investors alone recorded net purchases of 181.5 billion won. Foreign investors and institutions recorded net sales of 87 billion won and 78 billion won, respectively.
The general services sector saw the largest increase at 4.51%. This was followed by medical and precision instruments (1.23%), other manufacturing (1.17%), textiles and apparel (1.12%), machinery and equipment (0.96%), electrical and electronics (0.90%), and construction (0.84%). In contrast, transportation equipment and parts (-0.78%) and distribution (-0.73%) declined.
The movements among the top 10 market capitalization stocks were also pronounced. Samchundang Pharm surged by 13.0%, and Alteogen rose by 9.2%. Ecopro BM (1.3%), Ecopro (1.1%), and Rainbow Robotics (1.1%) also posted gains of more than 1%. On the other hand, Pharmaresearch (-1.6%), ABL Bio (-1.5%), and HLB (-0.5%) declined.
